Default Can I convert my printer to pigment ink with a refill kit?

I have a Cannon ip1600. You guys speak very highly about the durability of pigment ink. I understand it has little advantage if you use JPSS on light colors but is a MUST when using another xfer paper on dark colors (tell me if I got this wrong).

I want to switch but I'm a little foggy on how. Can I just purchase the ink and use a refill kit like I do with my dye based ink or do I need a whole new printer?

If not, I'm thinking of keeping a set of cartridges with dye and one filled with pigment (good or bad idea?).

Also, where is the cheapest place to get it?

Thanks guys.

Better to use separate cartridges!
