I've been in the embroidery business for over a year but quickly added a heat press to offer more options to my customers. I've been buying stock designs from proworldinc and custom vinyl transfers from stahl's but ended up buying a graphics program which included and interacts with Corel. I'm planning on doing cotton tee's and bags so I'll be using a pigment ink/printer.
My question is, if a customer wants me to design the artwork, what do I charge?
Also, I have a customer now who has their charity logo (already designed) but wants to add circular writing around it. I have no idea what kind of artwork or set up fee I should charge?
Also, should I charge more for the garment depending on the number of colors? Or does that not really make a difference in cost?
what do you charge to design a logo for your embroidery? Maybe the same rate. More work should be more cost. Keep it low and your customers will be happy. After all printers are a dime a dozen. Good luck!

Art/design charges for screen printing starts at zero for larger orders (100+ shirts) and I've seen $40 / hour with a minimum of $25.00. Average is about $20 to $25 per hour. Remember when quoting art you may not be as fast or experienced as your competitors so any extra time you spend should not be billed to the customer. It is a learning experience for you. In a while you will be able to quote $25.00 and knock it out in 20 minutes.
My Corel skills are still limited so when I run into something I can't handle I use a third party. There may be somebody on the forum who could help. You can post in the classifieds for SERVICE NEEDED. You should be able to find a freelance designer in your area as well. Just make sure they have a little understanding about your printing process so the art is prepared properly.
I have used Advanced Artist.com and was pleased with the quality and turn around.

Agreed...this is a good starting place.

I tried to pass this comment up but could not. Printers may be a dime a dozen but good printers providing good service and quality product on time are NOT.
Keeping your price low does not allow you to pay off the equipment you own, purchase new equipment when needed or grow your business. Not to mention you have to pay yourself!!
Charge a fair and competitive price. You will do better in the long run with a reputation of having great service and quality product.
When it comes to actual design, charge what you're worth. For some that may be $120/hr, for others it may be $10/hr.
For editing/layout, I charge $35/hr with a half hour minimum, charged in fifteen minute increments thereafter.
I agree it all depends on how good you are. I also like how you have increments of 15 minutes, it would make me feel better as a customer know that you not going to bill me for the extra half hour when you only did 15 minutes more work.
