How to handle questions from friends on where u get this & how much is that?
How to handle questions from friends on where u get this & how much is that?
OK
didn't quite know where to post this question but..
How do i handle people or friends or even customers who want to know where do i get my products or how much does this cost..
A good friend of mine coaches his son in football says that the team has a guy they go to for their shirts..i say ok keep me in mind when u want something different..
he says well how much would it cost for a pix of football & another graphic which he couldn't explain....but he wants to know how much would i charge?
I said well i am new at this but i would like to see the graphic before i can give u a quote..it may be a transfer, it may be silk screen, i would have to look at it...(I actually hope to learn more at the show in atlantic city next week)
He says well just tell me how much the material cost...how much is it for the transfers? the shirts?
I said whoa...i can't tell u that! He hammered me for about an hour, but i didn't break..
i just didn't feel that if he is a possible customer, why would i tell him how much i pay and he will know my profit...I am in this for business, correct?
Please help...what are the correct words to say so people can stay in their lane?

I think you handled the situation pretty well. It's too bad that your friend didn't want to take "no" for an answer. Stick with telling him that you need to see the graphic and tell him that it doesn't matter what you pay for it, you will give him the best deal possible.
Just on a side note, I'm a tattoo artist and I always get "how much do you charge for a tattoo?" I pretty much tell them "I have to see it to price it".
Re: How to handle questions from friends on where u get this & how much is that?
Thank u...people just never cease to amaze me! and if they are your friend, why don't they want to support your business?
that was a good answer to give...
Re: How to handle questions from friends on where u get this & how much is that?
its so true everyone is always asking how much you get your shirts for and wanting quotes when you have no clue what they want.. Sometimes you just got to tell them that you will let them know the pricce after you try out a few designs
Re: How to handle questions from friends on where u get this & how much is that?
....maybe he was bugging you because he really wanted to know the profit "the other guy/gal" was making......then go and try to "beat down" that price! ........when people ask me "how much do you pay"?....I just tell them I am not allowed to tell them because it is "secret wholesale info" and I promised not to divulge the "secret wholesale price list"!!! done!

Re: How to handle questions from friends on where u get this & how much is that?
and u know what... he did want to know what the other guys profit was on the shirts that they have been getting for years...He says he probably only have a machine like yours & doing it in his bedroom...i said so what? Its still a business that HE started!
Again its a business...we are all in it to make a profit!
I am happy for anyone to have repeat customers year after year...
This is why I do all of my pressing alone...they see what u do and think it looks so simple to do not realizing what comes with this
Oh i was watching Millionaire Matchmaker & one lady is the millionairess wanting to be matched up...they asked her how did u become a millionaire? she said she have a t-shirt bizness, Neiman & Marcus placed a HUGE order--- 32 million dollar order & she has become a multi-millionaire & her business had only been in existence THREE years!
I am in this business FOREVER!!

Hehehe, that's rich!
How do you deal with these type of questions when you are not even a print shop ?!
The awkwardness increases by 100% when you are just selling your fashion line and some people want to know how much did you pay for the plain shirt and the screen printing!
Re: How to handle questions from friends on where u get this & how much is that?
It can get awkward. My personal policy is to never tell anyone who doesn't need to know. But I know a lot of people who want to start a t-shirt label, so "need to know" gets hard to define
Sometimes I just throw them a second tier wholesaler. It's enough to get them started if they're serious (which people rarely are), but it doesn't give away the whole game if nothing ever comes of it.
If they really shouldn't be asking in the first place (like a friend at the retail level) it just depends on the friend. Some I might explain everything (because they're close), some I might jokingly tell to **** off, some I might tap dance around everything (family is the worst - no I'm not going to tell you, yes you think you have a right to know, but no you actually don't).
I wish there was one answer for everything, but I think it really depends on the person and the situation.

Just tell them....."the wholesale product price list is kept confidential" Usually, if not always, "wholesale" price lists are truly kept confidential.....so you will be telling the truth.
In fact....someone please correct me if I am wrong, T-shirt company "wholesale price lists" are not even allowed to be talked about here on the tshirtforums! By T-shirt company I mean distributors like Alphashirt, Bodek & Rhodes, Staton, American Apparel...etc.... Now maybe I am mistaken because sometimes I do see the wholesale lists being discussed on here. …..but when I registered my business with all of these companies I signed something stating that I would keep the "wholesale price list' confidential.

True, but those who are asking would rarely leave it at that. "Yeah, but you can tell meeee."

That's correct. We tightened down on it after one blank t-shirt company complained.
(it's also in the best interests of many members that the prices aren't easily found on this forum - though the truth is actual wholesale prices are extremely easy to find on the internet)

That's correct Since this is a public forum, we can't share the private pricing of the wholesale companies here.
If the companies have their pricing kept private for their registered customers only, then it's best that we don't post those prices here in the public forums.
Once you're registered as a business, it's easy enough to contact the companies and get the pricing on your own.
Some companies do make their wholesale pricing available to the public on their website, and in those cases, it's OK to pass on the information that is publicly posted there. Like jiffyshirts.com

I would answer with a question. As in "What price do you think is reasonable and what type of quality do you expect for that price? If you are confident that your price is competitive, I would suggest that they shop around and find out if they are getting a good deal. We all know that you get what you pay for, which should include a quality product, delivered on time and service with a smile! Have fun in ATL City!
Re: How to handle questions from friends on where u get this & how much is that?
Well i am grateful this info is not given to every "interest" in the bizness..
Being that i am new the entire tee shirt industry, u definitely have to have some persistence with u to make it & grow..and it is not a cheap start-up...where i purchased my startup ran me a pretty penny...And i was still spending $200 every other week and half of the supplies that i bought are sitting here taking up space..and that was shopping on sale, during the holidays!
I love the fact that we are given a different pricing than the regular consumer.. it should be like that but some companies stick an outrageous amt to purchase before u receive discount..
Can't wait to meet many of u at the atlantic city show next week!

...most wholesale companies that you register with will give you "case" pricing if you ask.
Call your "rep" at each company and let them know that you are a small start up business and that you would like to receive case price.....usually they will be nice & helpful and comply.
