Default IC Metallic Ink

Hi Everyone, I did a quick search on this topic and couldn't find a specific answer... hopefully one of you experts can help me!

I purchased a quart of IC Metallic Silver, ran it on some 100 percent cotton shirts through a 110 mesh, flashed em, and they looked absolutely stunning. I gave one to my friend, and he gave me the bad news after a wash... the metallic peeled off, design turned grey.

I did something I should have done previously, and looked at the washing instructions..they said to not use detergent with bleach..stick to water or something like woolite.

My question, is there a recommended ink that is more pratical, in the sense that it can be washed without any special instructions. My buddy told me that he has as similar metallic shirt, and it washes fine (with tide w/bleach).

Thank you for your time and I look forward to any replies.

-Dan

I'm pretty sure that the foil metallic style(printing with a adhesive and heat pressing the foil) is able to do normal washing.

As far as inks go, is there a specific one that anyone can recommend?

Hi Dan

You didn't do anything unordinary.
There's just a bit of mystery to metallic silver plastisols that some suppliers rarely explain.

For example, Union Ink makes two metallic silvers:

PLUSM120 RFU Silver that uses shiny alumium powder pigment that looks like liquid metal and prints like chrome if thick enough.
Downside is; the Alumium oxidizes after 1st or 2nd wash to a greyish surface if not capped with a top clear layer.

PLUSM128 Washable Silver that uses a micro-sized shimmer flake (smaller than norm) that prints and washes silver.
It's not a "metallic" looking as the M120, but is chosen in 4 out of every 5 gallons sold.

Also note that with all "metallics" (particle inks) it's important to have a thick enough layer fully cured for best performance.

Happy trails!
