Now we go back to your original statement; It depends on the designs!

Plastisol Ink Mesh Count General Guideline:
24-86 Mesh - Specialty Inks (See Below)
110 - Most Popular for Light Colors such as White.
156 - Most Popular for Black. Holds More detail than 110 but less ink will pass through the screen.
200-230 - Ink will need to be reduced. Holds high detail. Good for Solvent based and Water based Inks.
230-305 - Mostly used for super fine detail half tones and CMYK Process Prints, Solvent and Water base.

Specialty Inks:
86- 110 mesh for Metallic
60 - 86 mesh for Shimmers (60 Mesh For LB Shimmer)
24-36 mesh for Glitter Inks (24 Works Best)

Hello...
Im new to screen printing as well...
i originally purchased the silver press from Ryonet , which is a great press....and Ryonet is a great company with exccellent cusromer service....anyway...the package came with 4 110 screens which i used for my first set of shirts , and in my opinion the logo I had really didnt come out like I wanted...so I didnt print all the shirts(I printed 2) I went to silkscreeningsupplies.com and ordered 4 230 mesh screens and burnt the logo to these screens . which came out 100% better..so now I use the 110 for a white underbase and the 230 for everything else....hope this helps

For CMYK, I'd stick with 230 or 305 mesh.

If you're printing that as simulated process, I'd underbase it with a 195, overprint colors with 305's and highlight white 305.

If you're just going to do a white halftone on a black shirt, use a 195 or a 230 at around 50 lpi.

There is not an easy answer to this question. Although Tj gave a good rundown of some mesh possibilities, water based ink will have a hard time with meshes above 230, 200 can be a hassle at times. I think everyone is different when it comes to this question. The look of the final print needs to be considered, the feel of the shirt needs to be considered along with the ink used. We use 305 and 230 mesh for everything but water based ink and speciality inks. We also thin down our plastisol inks with a Wilflex Nova base. We do this for a better softer feel. I think you need several meshes and you need to play with all of them to find what works for you.
