Default printing on bonded leather?

I have a customer that is looking for a low quantity of jotter notebooks. Typically I would order these through a promo products supplier however in this instance her order is not large enough to meet the minimum and we are going to be under the gun on turn around time.

I was able to find a product that she liked and I can order them blank. They are made with bonded leather. The supplier normally screen prints these. But my question is how? Do they require a special ink? Can they be put through the dryer? What size screen should be used? etc.

I tried to call the supplier to see if they would share the information on how to do these but the customer service reps had no clue and couldn't transfer me to production. So it appears that I am on my own here.

I am wondering if this is something that I even want to tackle?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I have attached a photo of the item.

If you use an air drying ink you won't have to worry about sending them down the dryer. If you want to print them in house, I recommend NAZDAR or QCM Inks:

-call the nazdar technical hotline ,(866) 340-3579, their support people are very helpful and knowledgeable. Tell them your substrate and they can tell you exactly what to use. They can also tell you where your local distributer is. You can likely use your regular emulsion, but make sure to ask

-qcm recently released the RB series, air dry inks that can be printed on just about anything. Try to ask your regular supplier to get you a sample quart. It is water-based so you would need to use water-resistant emulsion.

screen size is not important, since the print will be pretty small I would put it in the corner or edge of a screen you were already going to burn.

If you have a heat press you can order a digiprint transfer from transfer express to accomplish this.

Use pellon material as a cover sheet so the leather doesn't gloss. Also, be sure to position your item on the heat press in a way that the print area gets even pressure.

we do quite a lot of those (plus business diaries etc) every winter, before the christmas holyday, as a corporate gift.

you need solvent inks that bond to soft PVC, that is the most common material used to make the covers.

but as there are a lot of sinthetic materials, you should do this: ask the suppliers of the notebooks what is the exact material, then consult your ink supplier.

the ink i use air dries in 15-30 minutes at room temperature, or in 20-45 sec if you use a domestic hair drier.
you must dilute them and it's a good thing to add some retarder, so the ink doesn't dry in your screen very often (ask the ink supplier for the righ substances, they are different for every kind of ink)

the mesh count should be 300.

good luck!
