i suppose you could trace the tree image with the pen tool that would create the path you would use for your clipping mask.
i might suggest you try doing this in photoshop. illustrator is not the best program to manipulate raster images. you want to use illustrator for vector graphics and photoshop for raster graphics like the one you've pasted.
you can basically do the same thing in photoshop with a layer mask.
