sounds like you're in need of a clipping mask.

your first tree is on the bottom layer. then take all the little trees and move them to another layer on top of that. then make a copy of the bottom layer and place it directly on top of the layer with the little trees (it has to be lined up exactly with the bottom layer). you now have three layers. then select the top two layers at the same time (large tree + little trees) and go to Object>Clipping mask>make (Command + 7)

that should do the trick.

you can also look up clipping mask in the help section of illustrator for a more detail description.
