You need pigment based in for heat transfers.

Dye sub is for polyester t-shirts (white or light colors) and uses a special ink and special transfer paper. The ink gets embedded in the fabric.

Heat transfers are ink on top of paper and when you press them, the ink sits on top of the garment. Heat transfers can be done on 100% cotton and polyester blends. There is heat transfer paper for light garments and heat transfer paper for dark garments (called opaque transfers)
