This is my opinion where I see shirt design styles in 2007.

I'm seeing lots of all-over prints like this:

I don't even like that and myself would never wear it. I'm just seeing it a lot now. Or they'll have a patterned shirt with a giant graphic screenprinted onto it.

Dying and distressing will become more and more mainstream. Stores like Pac-Sun and Hot-Topic began testing these high-end fashion shirts in their stores this year.

Companies like Affliction are going to be huge in 2007. They are setting the standard for that grungie, dyed and tattered look. They are already making a big splash in 2006, but I think 2007 is going to be a bigger year.

I also think brands like Cardboard Robot and other indie-gone-corporate brands make their way into big chain stores like Pac-Sun and Hot Topic.

I think kids are getting less afraid to spend $40+ on a t-shirt nowadays. Bands are still selling shirts for $10, but these fashion companies that cater to that same crowd are changing the way the t-shirt fashion scene is done.

Band shirts are becoming more and more like fashion items. It's not so much the black concert tee you saw in the 90's. As kids have access (be it legal or illegal) copies of the right software to create art on their computers, you'll see more experimental and evelope-pushing stuff. As you notice, shirt designs are getting larger and taking up more space on a shirt. It's very hard to find a screenprinter that will cooperate and do something like this for you as most are far behind the trends.

Great topic, Lucy (and great post Jeff).

: I separated this from the fashion design tutorial article because it definitely this topic deserved its own thread :

I heard from a fashion forecaster that the vibrant and punchy colored graffitti art is coming back.

more work for screen printers, plastisol transfer makers etc.
what do you think ?

Times are a Changing ... again.

I did cheat a little with that post/thread, since brands start their pre-production 6-12 months ahead of time. ...benefits of the job.

Thanks for the examples Jeff, and i do have to agree that Big is it for 2007.

I had the pleasure of playing around with some clear shaded transfer materials the other day and it sure looks like t-shirt designers could use such to create some amazing things.

Also, the Invisable type inks are cool too, they can be seen in the dark only, sort like the old glow in the dark effects but 2007 style. Another instrument for designers to go wild with.

Now by mixing various types all on one shirt would be fun. Anyway, i'll leave the designing to peeps like yourself and the to come trend sets.

thanks again Jeff.

For some reason, I find this hideous and wonderful at the same time.

Well it's looking good in the hood. I though some folks don't believe it. I think that there will be a lot of full shirt art too. I just wanted to show a few I have come across on the web. Sometimes I like to see what others are doing. This is lite weight comp.

If Picasso's bad trip left him vomitting onto hoodies... that would be the outcome.

If the designs shown are the styles today, or in 2007, then I'm sure they'll be something totally different in a few years.

Big prints have and are already being done. So what's in a few years?

I look to my magic T-shirt 8 ball...

You can find out exactly what the colour trends will be for up to about 3 or 4 years by seeing what new shades Pantone are currently selling to the dyeing houses.

I think the definition of a HIT aka popular for 2007 means everyone and their entire family will own one.

as for a few years down the road, microwaves that cook up custom t-shirts. ...a step beyond DTG.

also, call me crazy, but energy sun panel t-shirts will be here before you know it.

I'm working on T-shirts that come with rip cords and a safety chute
Or t-shirts that are like plasma screens, and the design changes depending on how many people are standing near you.

Kent, trends do come back mind you.

I remember Sergio Galli from Platinum BlondY wearing a shirt he got in Miami with little lights, we were sitting at the Elmocambo for the Duran Duran 1st. record release party (on Capitol records i think), it was like looking at a x-mas tree.

Dont be surprised if you see that comming back. With LCD lights of course. Heck, that will be the end of glitter plastisol transfers.
