Hey everyone here is the dilemma: We are going to MAGIC to buy ,but this year we want to give some of our stuff away so people can remember US. Any suggestions? We will be making some shirts to give away but what else so that we can STAND OUT!?
Pens attached to lanyards, calculators, woovy bags .. is good ad at trade shows and very popular. At least here in Asia. We buy alot of this stuff very cheap from china.. I think you should think about that.
If you're going to "buy", why do you want to give something away? Do you have a booth? Who is your customer or the person you want to remember you and thus the reason to give them something. We are in the promotional products business and believe me, lots of companies waste tons of money because they want "to give something away" at a trade show but have not thought about what they want to accomplish with that giveaway.
We hand out stickers at trade shows with just part of our logo on it (the blue square sad face only -- you can check out our site and then see what I mean if you are interested). Stickers are great because people wear them and then walk around all over the trade show, they stick them on stuff, and they're just fun. A pen gets thrown in a bag, but a sticker is kind of out there so that other people can see it all day.

nice site/concept jen.
Talking to people (networking) with a bus-card hand out works.
I mean, when I talk to someone in the business and they somehow capture my interest and give me their card, I tend to keep the card around and sometimes I follow up etc...
Oh - another thing I just remembered -- we also had a lighting truss with DJ / Disco lights going. This made patterns on the floor in front of the booth that ended up attracting people to our booth. If you're interested, send me a PM and I'll send you photos of how we set up.
If you are serious about giving away a lot of freebies, I think your best bet is to contact a sorting agent in China , Get them to complete an appropriate factory audit for you and compile some prices for things such as calculators and things like that to be manafactured and be printed with your logo on. These work as brilliant marketing tools as they are not short life products, this results in more exposure for your business, hopefully generating you more custom.
Another idea is things like mouses and digital cameras, you could have 1000 quite low quality cameras made for around $10,000. These would be kept for a long time and the sort of thing that gets people coming and visiting your stand at trade shows.
Finally, make something that they will have to or are likely to use everyday. These sorts of things can range from shirts (which should be pretty easy ) to things such as socks and I've even seen towels being given away. These sorts of things sound silly yet they are easily seen and can help to try and burn that company image into the consumers brain, which, at the end of the day, is the entire point of marketing in the first place.
I hope this post if of at least a little bit of help to you ,
Kindest regards,
Ben
