Ok... My band just bought about 500 tees. Now we want to sell them at our gigs. What can you tell me. Best ways. Your experience.
Please help. 500 seems like alot to me......
Some of my info:
Im an American living and playing music in Japan. My band (Sushi Cabaret Club) have been playing together for about 3yrs. Usaully we get about 100 to 400 people at our shows.
Re: Bought the shirts. Whats the best way to sell?
Konnichiwa MB...Mark down in Kyushu....
I have done several Band tees (I am also a drummer too!).
I honestly wouldnt have your frontman standing on stage with the shirt on although the logic seems like it should work in theory.... but really...SEX SELLS!!!! I like Monkeys suggestion about having a hot gaijin (foreigner) lady hop on stage showing off....
Also, maybe throw a few out into the crowd as freebies. Depending on the venue and what they will allow as far as selling, you should have someone selling in a booth along with some of your CDs etc...
You can also get a long piece of bamboo and put it through the arms of the shirt. You can string several of them on a single pole....its lightweight to put up and take down, its cool looking (rather than a metal or wood display) and it doesnt take up much space (hang it up on the wall).

Yeah!!! this all sounds good. The problem we come across is the sexy girl. We travel to Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto alot. Its hard to get "her" to sit in a van with four stinky guys and give a whole day to us.
Mark, are you in a band? Where and how do you make your shirts.
This is a new thing for me. I rather make our band's shirt than order it. This gives us more freedom, I think.....
Where in Japan do you buy your supplies? I can speak some low-med level Japanese.... All new vocab for me now.....
Re: Bought the shirts. Whats the best way to sell?
If there's a spot in the venue to setup a table, have a buddy setup there before, during and after the show with a table, your shirts, some CDs and stickers if you have them.
Just make it noticeable and mention it while you're on stage a couple of times and if people want to buy, they'll know where to go.
I've seen this with lots of bands, and many of them don't have a "hot girl" holding the merchandise...if you're fans of the band, then a lot of time people want to support that and express that by buying and wearing a t-shirt.
Re: Bought the shirts. Whats the best way to sell during our band's gigs?
I think the table with a few people selling shirts befor, during, and after is a smart approach. I would suggest getting both male and female model like people to man the table. I would also mention that these garments were new on the market and available for immediate sale. People love to buy things to remember events by. Good luck and best wishes ... Jb

I am in a band, but my band is in Honolulu...we havet gig'd in years though...
I am a screenprinter. I do my own shirts in my shop! I have printed for several bands as well as selling them at festivals etc...
I think that wanting to print our own shirts is cool...but you really need some detailed instruction/training as well as some investment into it to get the right equipment/supplies you need to start up. In Japan, there really isnt a source of inexpensive start up equipment....its REALLY expensive here. Inks are expensive too. You can buy a hobby type set up for about 50,000 yen (500 USD) it is simular to the cheaper type set ups on ebay...but it really isnt as professional as you may want the quality to be. Plus the amount of time it would take to print 500 shirts with sub par quality may not be worth it.
Another option is to invest in a heat transfer press, outsource screen printed transfers and press them as you need them.
Feel free to email me or PM me and I can set you up in the right direction....you are also more than welcome to tour my shop down in Fukuoka if you want to see what the basics are in printing.
