Default Why do brands delay selling new product on their websites?

I've noticed from going to the Pool show in Vegas that some brands will have a new line out for a while, but will wait to start selling (or showing) that new line on their website for quite a while. It seems obvious that they do this on purpose, but why?

My only theory is that its easier for them to sell to retail shops when they aren't directly competing via their own brands website. Am I wrong? Any input on what their strategy is here would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I would say they probably do this to not upset their core customers.

I think this is probably the most likely reason (unless they just don't update their website often).

...or, may be there are tied into an exclusive contact for a certain period of time on a new cool product.

Like Joe Big brand buys the exclusive rights to be the only one selling it for the next 6 months.

So the maker of this product will not widely advertise until the contract expires with Joe Big.

I know, an extreme example. Sorry.

most brands SAMPLE, SAMPLE, SAMPLE before trade shows ... they show the samples at the show, as part of a quarterly collection, with a ship date set in stone. They write orders on that collection. They eliminate the weak sellers, and go into production on their most popular items, and ship them on or before the cancel date, if all goes smoothly.

The larger the company, the more time they need to produce a collection because the big orders go to shops overseas. The big companies are booking orders that won't ship for 6-12 months; smaller companies might be shipping 2-4 weeks after a show.
