Effective for what? Invoices? Office stationery? Flyers? Brochures? T-shirt transfers? Depending on what you're using it for, you can get away with varying degrees of cheap.

Thanks for the reply. I guess I should have specified. I am trying to start making t-shirts from the heat press I just recently purchased. The heat press is a 4 in 1 press that allows hats, mugs, plates and apparel. Now I am kind of stuck on where to go with a decent quality yet inexpensive color laserjet printer. Also, is there a special type of transfer paper to purchase? And from what I see, does transfer paper range $2-5 per piece?
Okay, I'll move this to the laser printer heat transfer section: hopefully you'll be able to get more specific advice from folks in that section. Might be worth browsing some older threads too.
I've never used a laser for transfers myself.
For non-transfer work I bought a mid-priced HP colour laser ($400ish) and I've been happy with it - about the only thing I can add to the topic is that the technology is pretty good these days, and even cheap printers can produce fairly good results.

Welcome to the forums juice. Where are you located? The OKI printer seems to be the favorite of forum members in the States for heat transfer printing.
Going "cheap" with a laser printer and wanting to run transfer paper is risky. Laser transfers are much more difficult to run compared to inkjet transfers. Is there any reason you want laser compared to inkjet?
