Ordinary A4... i would then guess that you are not in the US. Either way...
In illustrator, change your page size to "letter" (8.5x11) [file > document setup].
Then when you [file > print].. in the 'media' choose "letter" from the dropdown menu. Also, watch the landscape/portrait area to make sure its right as well.
In Photoshop, go [file > page setup] and choose "letter" from the paper size option. Then when you print [file > print with preview], you should see your image in a preview window that will represent the 8.5x11 'letter' size.
