Discuss the different brands and sizes of heat presses available on the market, including Hix, GeoKnight, Hotronix, and other smaller manufacturers. Topics include maintenance, selection, styles and more.
Hey all, first time purchase...and need some advice/opinions....on ebay purchase. (I know, cringe)
After going through the person's feedback, I thought, it seems like everyone liked the guys' customer service and product. So, I bought it.
There wasn't much information from the seller about the model/make besides it being a China brand. I'd list the guys profile/website, but I'm not sure if it's allowed.
Anyways, I finally opened the box a few days ago. Keep in mind, at the time, I haven't tested the item, yet. I gave the machine a thorough look through and found a few items in question that I'm not sure if it is supposed to be there.
1) Residual markings from previous heat presses (I emailed the seller and he said there should be markings on the bottom side of the heat press due to their 4 hours testing of 350-400F). Granted, the markings are instructional, but why would they purposely burn two images on the top and bottom on the platen?
2) The heat press was dirty, it had minor rusting and/or dirt, and dirt markings on the press.
3) Stickers on the product is peeling off. The stickers look brand new, but it is not staying on.
4) When I opened the press, the bottom portion of the platen showed a metal surface. I referenced the Ebay listing and saw that it was supposed to be black with a black cushion...I went back to my press and saw that it stuck to the top of the platen. Is it normal for the bottom cushion to come off?
5) In the middle of the actual heat platen, it has a circular markings. If you rub your hand across it, you can feel the indentations...it stretches across the entire center.
6) When I turned on the product and set the temperature, the actual temperature would fluctuate +/- 5 to 8 degrees. I understand it may be normal dependent on each brand/model...but is it something I should be concerned about? I'm going to purchase a thermometer tomorrow to see if the heat is accurate.
I guess what I'm trying to figure out is if the seller sold me an actual 'new' item or if it was an open stock item that others have returned.

Go ahead and post it as well as a link or item number. If he put it for sale on ebay, it is allowed. Can't help you if I don't know what it is.

If in fact they test it, there should be no markings on either platen or heat element.
2) The heat press was dirty, it had minor rusting and/or dirt, and dirt markings on the press.
Very common on imported presses due to poor packaging. Rust and dirt (as well as print markings on the platen and heat element) mean it is probably used or a return.
3) Stickers on the product is peeling off. The stickers look brand new, but it is not staying on.
Most imports don't even have a brand name. They are re-labled by whoever imported them. Hence the fact that no one has ever heard of them before.

The cushion should always be easily removable to re-adjust and clean. It should NOT stick to either the heating element or bottom platen.
5) In the middle of the actual heat platen, it has a circular markings. If you rub your hand across it, you can feel the indentations...it stretches across the entire center.
Those are machining marks where the aluminum was smoothed.

A quality press will only fluctuate 2-3 degrees. Fluctuation is something you should be very concerned about if you have high production. Forget the thermometer and buy heat strips. Thermometers do not accurately read on aluminum surfaces.

Again, post the listing, I am guessing he sold you a used, or returned press.
If anyone can help out, I'd really appreciate it.
Give some more info and I will try to help out as best I can.
It look's like they sold you a used press, i would try to work it out with them and tell them your not satisfied with your new or used purchase. What's the name brand on it? If theres any...
Maybe I shouldn't have purchased it....when I asked the guy for local pickup, he charged me $10 more...which I understand he would have to wait for me, etc, but I think I would be saving him money from shipping as well....
Where can I buy these heat strips? Does walmart, target or radio shack sell them?
