Hi everyone. I just got my Mighty Press Port 11 x 15 from Imprintables (thanks to Josh and the staff over there!!! for some reason, the press did not go out as promised. They put an overnight sticker on it and got it to me on the day I was originally supposed to get it. Great customer service).
I must say, I have done a few hits with it so far and I am quite satisfied.
Now, my question is in regards to when my press is not in use. Should I leave the press open when not in use or should I close and lock it down? I wasn't sure if the press is supposed to remain in the open position when not in use or if its in the closed position is fine as well. And help would be appreciated.
I once asked a similiar question. The majority of answers I got was to leave it open. One of the reasons I was given was that closing it applies continual pressure on the rubber pad of the lower platen and could compress it - reducing it's lifespan. I do leave mine open when not in use.
I would think, tho, that Josh could probably give you the best qualified answer. Have you thought about sending him a PM here or an email at his work?
Good luck with the new press. I have the MP 11x15, love it. Great presses. =)
We use a Geo Knight swing away and the manual says to leave it open when not in use. We had been closing it (before reading the manual) and it started sticking shut and lifting the bottom platen when we tried to open it. We weren't even locking it down - just closing it and letting it rest on the bottom. We also have a clam shell press and leave it open too.
Thanks! That does make sense. In the few businesses I have been in where they have a press on display or one for use, but not activated, it's always open. But your explanation does make perfect sense and I didn't think about the continuous pressure compressing the lower pad and reducing it's lifespan. I will leave it open from now on when not in use. I got a great deal from Josh and I personally love getting the most bang for my buck. Because they are hard to come by. So, making sure this piece of equipment will lsst me a long time is essential. Thanks again!
I have a 15x15 mighty press. I back the pressure off and leave mine closed. I don't want dust or anything else in there.
Mines a 16X20 but I too close mine for storage when not in use. All the time now due to circumstances. I just back off the pressure as far as I can and still get it to stay shut. I put mine on a movers dolly so I can roll it under the table out of the way. Not mounted or anything so I can just pick it up (not good for aching back) and put it on table when needed.
They are stored closed in the box so I don't think there is any risk of damage when leaving it closed, however this may vary per manufacturer and you should check with whomever you purchased it from.
I would be comfortable recommending either way for the Mighty Press line, but open makes sense if this doesn't pose an issue for you. Being open can't hurt the press.

Thanks Josh! I really wasn't sure and obviously want my MP to last as long as possible.
My press has MILES on it. We store it open whenever it is at home or on site ... it puts pressure on the springs when closed. In damp areas, we throw a towel or sheet over it overnight to prevent moisture from getting in/on it.
When we are traveling, we keep it closed. Less possible injury. Early on, I encountered occasional sticking, so now, I always put a pillowcase (or any other thin fabric) on the platen before closing.
I'd like to know what techniques some of you have when it comes to protecting from dust and what not when your press is not in use? My press is in a dry place. But it can get dusty from time to time. So I was thinking of covering the top and bottom platen with tracing paper and just put a piece of regular tape to keep it in place. Unless I could find some sor tof psuedo transparent poncho to cover the press.
