Default HIX Heat press questions

I saw this listed on ebay

& had a couple questions, I know HIX are suppose to be good press. It looks like there is no cover over the heating element , won't that get really hot ? I have never operated a heat press, so sorry if that is a dumb question. The listing said "the foam is worn" I am guessing you could switch that out, any suggestions.

And finally, assuming this is solid machine, how much is it worth in your opinion.
Anything else I should be asking about the machine ?

The heating elements do not have covers. Also, I assume the 'foam' is the silicone base pad. It can be replaced for about $75. What model is this used machine, how much has it been used? I would think that if the pad is worn it must have been used quite heavily.

That is an older Hix HT-400, probably around the late 1990s. It originally had a sheet metal cover over the heating element that had a thin layer of insulation between the cover and element. The pad is easy enough to replace but there are other parts prone to problems, particularly the springs and casting wires. At the time, that was the low end press in the hix line. I would think the shipping would be more than the press is worth given the looks of it. He wants $100 shipping!

Hix is a great press, I have several air automatics much older than that one and still going strong but I would think that unless you can pick it up to avoid shipping and get it for about where the bidding is now, pass and keep looking.
