Default Heating up my press?

Hi guys! I just got my first samples and have begun using my press for the first time. I have a couple of questions I couldn't find the answer to anywhere on here... I might have missed them. Forgive me for being somewhat uninformed.

First question, should I heat up my press with it open or closed? I have been heating it up with it open, but it doesn't seem to want to get up past 270 degrees... Should it be closed?
Second, should I put the shirt around the platen or just lay the whole thing on top of it? I just laid it on top for my first samples, and didn't seem to have an issue..
Thanks!

NO! Do not keep it closed while you heat it up. If it doesn't get to your preset temp. something else is wrong. Is it in Celcius or Farenheit? Some machines are in Celsius.

You can put the shirt around the platen or place the whole thing on top but don't stretch it taut over the press - this can be noticeable on small size shirts.

I place most regular t-shirts (neck up) completely on top of the platen. For thicker materials, like sweatshirts, I feed the shirt over the platen (neck down, so you press your design upside down). This also works if you are pressing a transfer on front and back. This works nicely on my 15x15 with most shirts.

Your heat press should normally sit open when not in use.
