Lightbulb Registration and Alignment

Hi!

This is my first post but I've been reading the forums for a very long time, and I love all the great information.
When searching for registration subjects, I mostly come across the "tee square it". While this looks a real great gadget, shipping might be a problem for me.

This leaves me with 3 questions:

1) Any neat tricks and tips for registration a transfer without that gadget (and by registration I also mean the simplest alignment of a 1 color vinyl)?

2) For vinyl, I read that some choose the plot a register marks and then tape on the marks so it won't get transferred- Can someone please elaborate on this technique?

3) What measure do you guys use to horizontal align your transfer (i.e.- number of inches from the neck line)

Thanks

i use a t-square from office-max. I align with the left side of the platen. I know it's not very accurate but I go down 4 fingers from the neck.

The distance from the neckline varies depending on the imprint, a short imprint might be lined up lower than a full size imprint. I always hold it up to myself to see where it looks good, take a quick measure and then align them according to that. a bit higher on smaller shirts and a bit lower on larger shirts, after you do it a while you will get a good feel for placement.

makes sense. but then how do screen printers deal with that issue of different sized shirts? they obviously don't replace the screens line up for small and large shirts.

I vary the position of the neckline vs. the platen. sometimes the neckline will hangoff the platen, but touch it, and on larger shirts it may hang 1" below the platen...does that make sense? you adjust how you put the shirt on the platen to print rather than the print itself.

This link should help you out - Inkjet Garment Printing - Screen Printing University • View topic - Image Placement Cheat Sheet. Now days, there are no hard fast rules with designs being placed all over the shirt... but this sheet should give you a good starting basis.

Best wishes,

Mark

Great source!
I've made some measuers for shirts I've bought from different places.. and 10-12" design go a bit more then 3" from the collar so I guess there are no rules as you wrote.
