Default Printing on cardboard

I am wondering if there are other ways to print on cardboard that I should consider. I will probably outsource but I am curious.

Not wanting to do screenprinting, which would work for single or a few colors.

Also I figured to buy a new printer (that would be able to feed thick cardstock) would cost a bunch.

The best option I can think of is to print onto sticky (perm adhesive) label paper and then put the label onto the cardboard, which is sort of 'cheating' because I am wanting the print ON the cardboard.

Can I print laser or inkjet transfers and heat press them, and if so, does it have to be special cardboard in any way? Any other options?

I'm going to be buying a vinyl cutter, but I don't see how that helps either, unless I just want 1 color.

Thanks.

Generally, screen printing would be the most cost effective way to print on cardboards. I think you can even do CMYK process screenprinting if necessary. A flatbed printer could be used too, but the UV flatbed machine is pricey (as are the UV inks), although I've seen some hybrid flatbed solvent printers, and I think that it could do a good job on cardboards. As for laser transfer papers, I think Nenah's "mugs n' more" or Forever's "multitrans" could be used. Lastly, when you want to "cheat", you can also use vinyl "print & cut" stickers.
