Hello, I own a business that supplies the Youth Sports Market and have a friend that recently took a horrible fall and is now paralyzed from the waist down.
The screenprinter that I work with said she would be fine if I got my friend to Number the uniforms we do to give him something to do.
My 1st question is, do any of you out there have a history on working a heat press from a wheel chair. My friend has retained excellent upper body strength. My concern is the ability to look down on what he is doing.
My second question is what equipment would you suggest.
We are currently numbering about 5,000 pieces a year and would also plan on attending tournaments and events with the press to do some customization on site.

I would think that a semi automatic heat press that could be placed on a low table that had enough room so that his lower body, and the chair could fit under the table would be suitable. Since the press would open automatically he wouldn't have to pull up on the handle. A 15x15 would be more than adequate.

I agree with Ed. Also, since some of those presses open pretty wide (high), you may want to attach a strap to the handle to assist him in the initial pull down of the press onto the shirt.

Hi ... I am an experienced disabled person who runs a T-shirt co from Home. I would suggest a slightly lower table so he can see the planten clearly. It may have some effect on his back but if you say he's in good upper body shape then he should be quite capable of doing that job and more.

People who use heat presses repetitively have been known to get tennis elbow or shoulder strains which would be devastating to someone with limited mobility. I would not risk this by using a manual press. Choose something automatic.
I was thinking one of the swing or draw style presses may be better.
That would give him the clearance to lean over the work from his chair without burning his face. And be able to reach a button to operate it, rather than having to wheel his chair back and forth for each shirt.
And of course, use a lower table.
Other jobs in this industry that could be done from a chair:
art design & vectorizing
running a vinyl cutter
weeding vinyl
anything to do with heat transfers
and don't forget sales, marketing and research
