Default Heat press basics (n00b)

Hi. I was going to start a website dropshipping tshirts but have recently decided (after talking with my dad) that It might be worth while actually making something of this and doing them myself instead of just having a website and not really making it into a business.

My current boss (family friend, sign writing business, quite a similar trade) has heat press which he has never used (given to him for some reason). So Im just doing a lot of research finding as much as I can about the whole process etc. so i can propose something to him whereby I may be able to have use of the press. Even if its just to test it on a few shirts before i get myself some equipment.

So as I gather, you basically just have a design printed to 'special' paper, lay it up in the press with the tshirt in there too and litterally heat the design on. Is it really simple as that?

I have been searching the site and not found a step by step guide through the process.

So I take it with the right printer and cartriges and peper etc you can have the designs printed by yourself and do everything there and then within minuted really. Designing is ok as i do that for my job anyway.

Its quite hard getting to grips with everything but not so bad with the help of this site! Its reeeally interesting actually though!

Thanks for any help

Producing printed gaments with a heat press is quite simple. Basically, there are three options. You can purchase preprinted designs, of which there are several thousand available in all categories. You can also have your designs produced by a professional transfer manufacturer, i.e. www.transferexpress.com. And last, you can produce your own designs and print them on transfer paper using an inkjet or laser printer. Theer are many threads on the forum that cover all of these options. Also, there are several videos that deatil the use of a heat press.
Take a look at some of the Preferred Vendor Introductions for many of these features.

Thanks for your reply.

So its a pretty basic process really.. thought it would be more complex lol. With this heat transfer paper, can you use any inkjet/laser printer (I.E. the thing I have upstairs for printing letters and stuff).. surely its not that easy?

Ill be doing things for small local businesses (like their company name and contact number etc.) so need to be able to do this myself quickly and easily.

Have a lot more research to do

Yeah, it's pretty easy. if you are deciding on inkjets you will have a much easier time compared to laser. Laser printers are just difficult. HP laser printers generally print too hot and melt the paper. Inkjet will give alos give a better quality, so if you have an inkjet printer...you're set.

not complex at all. but to do something hot (no pun intended) you need to pay attention to details. i've already moved onto putting my logo on the sleeves and/or the back. relabeling, hang-tags, etc..

i did a basic video customizing a t-shirt. check it out below!
