Hey guys,I love this forum.I need some advice.I am thinking of going with a epson 1280 and I need a bulk ink system for printing my transfers.I currently do about 100 per month ,but I could do more if I go with the larger format printer.Would I be better off with sublimation or pigment ink?any help would be appreciated.Which is cheaper and what suppliers do ya'll trust?
It seems pretty difficult to get much in the ways of reviews for bulk ink systems. I've decided to go the bulk route as well and am looking for a system for a C88+ I intend to buy, but so far nobody here has any input =)
I also asked over at the Yahoo HTFDP Board and got a few responses, so I'll likely post back here (Bulk Ink Systems for Epson C88+) with what other information I get.
My question is - do you really want to go the bulk ink route? I recently switched to refillable cartridges and find this method to be much less hassle. You can buy the blank cartridges from several suppliers. I use them in my 1270, C86 and C88.
The other question for you - how often do you think you will need the wide format offered by the 1280. I hardly ever use mine. I find I can fullfill 99% of my orders using a $99.00 Epson C88 printer and refillable cartridges with dye sub ink.
I get the cartridges from Starline Pacific. They have offices in BC, WA and ON. They are very easy to fill. There aren't too many choices on the North American market for dye sub ink. I don't want to promote a specific brand on the forum.

Just a tip but I have a 1280 and it clogs a lot when using my pigment inks. I have a refillable system that I purchased from AET that I love. But as for the printer the photo stylus's arent made for pigment inks. The heads clog easily. I would recommend either the R1800 or a smaller one like the C88 or C86.
I have the 1280. I like the wide format, I use it for more than photo transfer.
I need the extra space to print and cut with my Roland GX-24.
I just installed a bulk system with ink that I got from The Paper Ranch. The ink flows through the heads much better than when I was using Magic Mix. The black is darker and I haven't had any banding problems as before.

But is it pigmented ink? Their website doesn't say, so I would assume that it is not.

It is not a pigmented ink but it was designed to do T-shirt transfers. They can give you a better description if you call them at 800-777-2624.
The ink expert is Nick. I met him at the Atlanta ISS show.
I was using Magic Mix, but it was very sensitive to nozzle plugs. It would get half way through a design and one nozzle would plug or I would get wide banding streaks that would ruin the printout. I haven't had any problems with the paper ranch ink, and I think the color is a little bit brighter and true.
Yes, it does cost a little more, but I would rather have a product that works well every time. It will pay for itself with fewer lost sheets of paper and time.
I wouldn't trust a dye-based ink to not bleed and to have good washability, myself. I would be interested to hear if anyone else has tried to use this ink, though.
