Default 1 Step Opaque Paper

I've been teaching myself how to use transfer paper and the light paper is a snap. I bought the 1 step opaque paper and I'm underwhelmed to say the least.

You have to peel the backing off, place it face up and press. But, I was very disappointed when I saw the end result. The white background is part of the transfer. I assumed that it kinda "disappeared" when you pressed it. I trimmed around it as instructed and had I known, I would have left it square. At least it would have looked like a picture or frame, etc. Instead it looks exactly like the monstrosity that I cut.

Do ALL opaque papers do this or is it just the 1 step paper?

If so, someone really needs to come up with something better.

That is how all the opaque papers work, the only other way to achieve the same result is if you had the ability to print white ink. The best way I've found to use the opaque transfer is to make your designs like a decal, with an easy to cut outer shape.

cheers,

eric

Thanks. That kinda puts a damper on dark transfers doesn't it.

That's how it is. Opaque leaves everything you don't cut out. Dark shirts need to be done with screen print or plastisol.

Unfortunately Screen Printing isnt an option when your just setting up business and printing on demand in 1 off quantities. It’s a bummer i know this opaque business. Is it the same with Sublimation? Do you still have to cut the image out?

It's fine for new businesses; it's the one off requirement that makes it useless.

Nope, sublimation sublimates the ink into the fibres of the garment. Only the ink is transferred, so no cutting required.

...also, sublimation is useless for what the poster was after, since it can't transfer to dark fabric.

Man, this is a bummer. This is just another bump in the road. Maybe I can return the unused (unopened) paper for an exchange. I really don't have a need for it. This sucks.

Hey John,
I feel your pain. If you want to remove the transfer from the shirt just place a sheet of computer paper over the transfer and re-press it. Then peel it hot and it will come right off. (Learned this neat trick from Lou).

Also, I've just been cutting dark fabric transfers with a scissors and getting it as close to the design as possible.

John, have you tried getting plastisol transfers made, or were you hoping for a solution that you could print from your printer at home?

I'd really like to do it myself...at home or on the road.
