Question Qusetion with heat transfer: which side to iron/press?

Hi im new to this but i was wondering. I just had office max make me a transfer and i applied it to the shirt myself. The thing is I looked online to find the proper way to do it but i found two diff. ways. One said that I pull the backing off ( with the line) and then iron the image like that. The other said that I had to flip the image( which officemax didnt do) and then iron the paper backing and ten peel. Can someone tell me which way is better or what is the proper way? Thanks

Hard to tell for sure, but it sounds like you're actually comparing instructions for 2 different types of paper. The first method sounds like some variety of opaque paper - these papers have more of a rubbery feel to them and are designed for darker shirts.

The second method is the normal method - place the (cut) transfer on the shirt, press (or iron), then remove the paper (either immediately or after it cools, depending on the paper).

By the way, I'd suggest trying the Avery brand transfer paper (for lights) and not the OfficeMax brand. Before we went professional, we just printed a few random shirts for ourselves, and we definitely had better luck with the Avery paper than the OfficeMax brand paper.

Offhand, I would guess pressure. It's very important to provide even, consistent, and heavy (for an iron) pressure. This is why a heat press is so handy =) When using an iron, make sure you press firmly into the t-shirt with both hands, on low enough table. Then, try to press across the design evenly.
