Default 11 x 17 Paper, is it worth while to buy a printer for it?

Hi All,

I am thinking of buying a printer that will print 11 x 17 paper, my question is.

Is it worth while to have a printer that will print this size paper and how often do you use it, if you are using this size paper.

The printer is not cheap so I would really like to get as many feedbacks as I can on this issue.

Thanks for your input
Ted

It boils down to your designs. Chec out www.epsonstore.com for a refurb unit in the large format. If you don't see one call and ask if they have a 1400, 1800 or 1900. sometimes they are not displayed.

Lou's right, if you don't see yourself applying transfers larger than 8 1/2 X 11, then why bother?

Unless the discount on that size paper is so significantly less that twice an 8 1/2 X 11 that it will pay for the printer after a while.

About 95% of the paper we sell is 8 1/2 x 11. Unless you think you will have some really great large graphics I don't think it is a profitable investment.

Good Point, the paper from what I see is doubel the price of 8 1/2 x 11. Could get very costly doing shirts.

Well, there is another thought. As long as it's not more than twice the cost, and you have a paper cutter, buy the larger size and in the event you do have an oversized print, you can do it. For everything else, just cut the 11 X 17 in half to get back to a normal size.

I would say, If you can afford it, get it! Even if you rarley go larger 8.5x11, you'll be happy when you dont have to outsource for bigger prints. You could also get a paper cutter to chop the paper(11x17) in half to get the right size.hope this helps.

That would be a good idea, I am not sure about buying the printer since they are not cheap, even a referb.

I would rather have the capability of going larger than stuck with a smaller paper. Just be careful using some of the paper cutters when cutting the transfer paper. For weedable papers, you want to make sure that you use a guilotine type paper cutter and not a cheap slide paper cutter that may rip instead of slice the paper or the polymer layer. Might require a slightly more expensive paper cutter.

I semi-agree, cheap rotary cutters do scrape, quality ones don't until the blade needs replacing!

Does anyone know why these companies don't make a 8 1/2 x 14 Paper?

You would not need a special printer and there are many designs that I wish I had the extra 3" to work with.

I know that you can buy the 11 x 17 paper and cut it, however, it would be nice not to have to go through the hastle of doing that.

I would think that the 11x17 would not be of value unless one had a 16x20 heat press...so you need to add the cost of the printer/paper and press to see total investment needed
