Unhappy New to transfers; transfer area is "raised" on T-shirt

Hi,

I'm new to using heat transfers and have just done a couple samples using JPSS. Once the backing is peeled off, the fabric where the design was printed is "raised" a little, which looks kind of bad. I guess that in the process of peeling the backing paper off, the fabric underneath it stretches, causing it to puff out a little. Is this normal with heat transfers? If so, does anyone press the fabric again to flatten it out? I haven't seen this addressed here (if it has, please point me to a thread) so I thought I'd inquire.

Thanks,

Steve

I have never had an issue with raised areas.

Do you lightly stretch the design after peeling the paper off?

Hey Steve,

Do you mean just little really tiny bumps? I get that when I peel. The JPSS is a bit harder to peel than the Ironall paper I used to use. Actually, the Ironall peeled like butter, and had a very soft finish, where as I find the JPSS *grabs* the shirt a little more and the finish feels a bit grainy, probably due to the polymer raising as the paper is pulled.

I re-press the shirt with teflon, you can also use parchment paper, the baking paper from the grocery store. It seems to relieve that and leave a smoother finish. Don't forget to stretch the shirt while it is hot before you do the last re-press.

I've never used that material specifically but I usually heat press them again after I peel off the transfer tape. Obviously make sure you have a teflon sheet between the HTM and the platen. This tends to cure/set the transfer and eliminates any puffiness.

Thanks Joe, Kelly, and G- for the replies. Actually, the raised area of fabric I was talking about was the whole area where the transfer was applied. But now that you mention it, Kelly, yes, I get those "bumps" too. I was surprised that the transfer didn't peel as easily as the Avery transfers I had used previously; the JPSS definitely grabs the fabric a little. But I will definitely try re-pressing after the backing is removed, using teflon between the transfer and the platen.

Thanks!

Steve

Yep, I went from Avery, to Ironall, to JPSS, and wish the JPSS peeled like the others. Of course, the JPSS is the only one to be *so* colorfast, so I think it's the trade off. Looking at it that way makes it easier to live with for me. I hope it works out for you, Steve.
