Default Epson 1280: do I need to clean the print heads to prepare the printer for new ink?

I recently purchased a used 1280 printer and it came with cartridges.
I intend to purchase refillable carts and pigment ink to do t-shirt
transfers. My question is, prior to installing the pigment ink carts,
do I need to clean the print heads or do anything else to prepare the
printer to accept the new ink. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance for your help.

You shouldn't have to do anything prior, no. The printer will probably run something to that effect when it sees it has different cartidges in place automatically. Always print a test sheet before queing up a ton of transfers though =)

I dont know about others. But I always run 1-2 cleaning cycles before swapping to the new set. The mix of the inks may block the heads.
