With the brother printer, you can not print on dark shirts. Maybe that is what they were referring to. Since the brother does not print white ink, it limits the colors of shirts you can print on.

With dark shirts you can use either opaque transfers or vinyl.

we have a brother also. You can print on darker shirts if the ink is darker than the shirt. We have done many military green and indigo blue shirts with black ink.
As for the transfers you can do those with the inkjet printer but in my own opinion I would never sell one to a customer, I personally do not like the way they feel. If you are used to the no feel with the brother I do not think you will be happy with transfers either. I could be wrong but we purchased some and I still have all but one left, (gave that to a kid for a night shirt since I didn't feel it was worth selling) but again many people do the transfers and love them, so you have to decide for yourself if you like the way they look and feel.

I thought you needed a heat press to cure the brother ink? I have seen demos at shows and that is what the Brother folks used. And if that is what you use, it would take a very small additional investment to start doing vinyl for darks, no?

Hmmmm....OK, so I have the Brotherr digital 541 garment printer, plus I have the Rolan GX24 that does vinyl (Thermoflex)....but that's only easy for one color(multi color is a pain wiwth the Roland)...
So, back to my question: why do I need heat heat transfers? I am thinking I will need sosmething to easily do multicolor designs on dark shirts. So if I use the Epson 1400 that I have (allegedly the best), and use regular TransferJet TJ8 and TJ11 paper, will I be able to print on , say, black with , say, a Harley Davidosn logo (which also contains white colors)??
amy help for this newcomer is, of course, greatly appreciated

Well I would be careful about printing harley davidson merchandise as its trademark is strongly enforced. But as far as printing on darks, you will not get the quality of the dtg with a transfer, its just not near the same in comparison. I would look into maybe getting plasitol transfers made for a multi color design on darks. Plasitol transfers are screen printed so they are a much higher quality then transfer paper.

You can print on dark shirts if using transfers and have white but as I said before you may not be happy after having the "no feel" of the brother inks, to me they feel like a piece of paper stuck on a shirt. But again just my opinion.
