new heat transfer user - my tests with opaque and plastisol transfers
Hi there, I'm a newbie as well. I just received my first heat press today and I had previously ordered some sample packs of various different transfer papers. I must admit that I only tried the opaque papers (mostly because the test shirts I had were black, bad planning!). Anyhow, I guess I was expecting a softer hand that what I got. The transfers seemed very thick and dry (and cracked very easily when stretched). Is this normal, or could it be too much heat for too long? Also, the color looked very dull, which may be my printer. Maybe my expectations were not realistic. I did try some plastisol transfers and had a few come out perfect (many came out not so perfect!)

Unfortunately...that is pretty common for the opaque transfers. The opaque transfer technology is not there yet. I would personally stay away from opaque transfers until we get a technology breakthrough.....hoping and waiting!
The best way to put a picture on a colored / dark shirt (IMHO) is using DTG or 4-color Process screenprint for higher volumes. I would get my hands on the JetPro SoftStretch heat transfers (JPSS) and give them a try on white / light colors. They are the best in the industry at the moment.
I wanted to put a couple pics of what I was talking about. The three red, white and black transfers towards the bottom were printed with Everlast, Jet Dark and Inkjet opaque. The PowerSports was a sample plastisol transfer from KE Motographics and worked perfect.
