please help- my cotton fabric looks burnt after transfer!
Im new at this and just tried transfering an image onto a 100% organic cotton tote. It was completly flat and at 375 degrees, I pressed for 30 seconds, and it turned out horrible. Any advise?
Re: please help- my cotton fabric looks burnt after transfer!
my first tote transfer was very bad too In my case I used a tote I had purchased at Michaels. I figured a tote, is a tote, is a tote...not. This tote was a canvas, with very deep ribbing and NYLON handles. I melted the handles onto my press and the transfer came out ridged, it was so very bad.
Might I ask what about your tote was bad? did the color not transfer? did it just have a yellowed burned look?
Did you get the tote from an apparel blank provider? What transfer paper or transfer method did you use?

Re: please help- my cotton fabric looks burnt after transfer!
So, I got brave and tried tote #2 (8 months later) I use teflon top and bottom, full size of the platen, I have a 16 x 20 press so I moved up the tote to just below the stitching. I got a scorch line as well, it is pretty close to the top seam but still visible. I use Duracotton HT so the temp is 400c 20secs, heavy pressure. I've included a pic of the scorch mark with the line noted by the arrow. Not sure how to eliminate it. I have my first tote order I am prep'ing for, it will be for 250. Any ideas how to avoid this? For fun I attached the sample with art, it will be a two sided press with mostly text, a sponsor give away.

Re: please help- my cotton fabric looks burnt after transfer!
Some totes have sizing on them, and that product "burns" under the press. Not all totes can be heat pressed. What the OP is describing sounds like it's possibly the wrong kind of totebag.
First check these:
-If the heat press is running at the correct temp, and not overly hot.
-Totes have alotttt of moisture in them, they must be pre-pressed to dry them before pressing.
- Even a low seam can interfer with the correct pressure, raise the imprint area above the seams.
- If the teflon doesn't solve it, it's could the tote itself.
Badalou/Lou uses Topper 806 totes for this reason, they can go under the press. Here's a link to a thread on the totes. Doing a search on topper 806 totes will bring back a few threads with good advice on totes. Here you go: Heat Transfer Images Not Transferring - Help?
Re: please help- my cotton fabric looks burnt after transfer!
This tote I just pressed was a Port & Co budget tote B150 from Sanmar, it looks exactly like the toppers, 100% cotton, very smooth finish, good for heat transfer. Has anyone else had luck with this tote? I did a quick prepress at 400, for like 7 secs or so, perhaps I need to work out more moisture first. The handle stitching was off the press as I moved it up, the scorch line is where the press touched the tote. I will investigate the Toppers 806, thanks for the tip!
Alas, there is no money on this one as I am donating labor for my Reining Club. We are hosting a Regional Finals show in October and I really want us to look professional to our long distance competitors. I am also a sponsor so my name will be on the other side and I hope to incorporate my full logo as well for marketing in exchange for my time

Re: please help- my cotton fabric looks burnt after transfer!
Hey TM, since your bags are cotton, I wonder will that mixture folks use of the "vinegar and water" or the "hydrogen peroxide and water" combinations will get rid of the scorch marks for you like it does on the tees??? Heres a few posts for you on the subject:
Re: please help- my cotton fabric looks burnt after transfer!
I was told to use a bit of rubbing alcohol and swab over the print area to remove the water proofing that is put on to most of the bags. I haven't tried it yet myself. I was told this by a supplier. If anyone tries it post the out come please, Lori Jo
