Discuss the various aspects of heat press technology. Transfer paper, inks, plastisol transfers, vinyl cutters, printers, commercial usage, durability, suppliers, etc.
I wish I would have known that the Hix presto 15x15 was not teflon. Every time I press a t-shirt or plaque it leaves burn marks on my presser. They tell me to clean it with soap and water (not working) I'm scared to scrub it with metal scrubber because I don't know if it will scratch it and what effect it will have on my t-shirts, tote bags, plaques, etc., I'm losing money
And I've been burned at least 10 times the machine barely opens. AUGHHH! I miss my old machine Gave that to my mom!
Any info on cleaning and avoid burning my orders will be greatly appreciated, maybe I should sell it and get another one!!
I have the same press, but I guess I've gotten use to it ... I rarely burn myself. As for cleaning, try EZ Off. Take a look at this thread: Cleaning Heat Press I know exactly what you mean about the 'burn marks' and the EZ Off will get rid of a lot of it – but not all. Even though there are some still left, these marks don't affect my pressings any.
Oh, also you can just buy a 15x15 Teflon sheet to place on top of your shirt before you press. I have one, but I rarely use it ... that's why my press is so ugly. =)

I use a tephlon sheet for dark but I was told to ease up on the preasure because my dark shirts would have small indents in them from the teflon sheet.
I am curious. I have always used my teflon sheet, and on the very rare occasion that I forget I ruin the shirt. How do you all manage to get a dirty gummed up platen and not ruin shirts? I say the easy fix is use a teflon sheet cut to size. I have teflon on top and bottom on my press.
If you use teflon that is the size of the platen, or perhaps overlapping a little on all edges, you shouldn't see an indent as a result.

When I do white & light items I use inkjet and that has a paper backing so nothing ever sticks, that is until I got this non-teflon Machine .
When I use the opaque paper for Med/Dark color items I always use that wax paper or whatever it's called that comes with the opaque. I purchased huge a teflon sheet, but the ink would come up when I pulled it off. So I stick to the non-stick paper.
My process with the teflon is that I press, then use a terrycloth washrag I wipe off the ink, I have never had the ink stick to the point it was difficult to remove. I guess I am used to my process now so the wiping down of teflon is a quick thing. I do also have a supply of parchment, but only use it if the paper calls for parchment.

I rarely had to wipe my teflon heat press. I guess I need to get into the habit of scrubbing after every use or just sell it. I think
I'm moving closer to just selling and getting a teflon press that opens all the way. My arm/hand have so many burn marks.
Thanks for the info and for giving me the correct name of the wax paper (parchment) , because I tried to find it separate from the Avery Dark transfer packs but couldn't find it.

You could buy a teflon pad with elastic and put one on top and one on the bottom. Both will be protected and you won't forget to use it. I hear 409 cleans the teflon well.

according to the techs at Hix ,that is not a good idea. This would allow for a accurate tempature. .... JB

Hiya JB,
I plan to do this with my own press. One on top and one on the bottom... one member in the thread asked Geo Knight before doing it and they helped assisted him in setting it up, and another member said they have the fitted pad on their upper platen for 4 years without a problem...
Here's a link to the thread for anyone who wants to read the thread that finally convinced us. There are other posts out there on this as well, this is just the last one we read: how to attach telfon sheet
, now in all fairness, you are in the thread saying your against upper platens having teflon, but in all my reading, Mark and I are inclined to like it, and we're going for it, we feel this will help us keep our press clean, and help us not to forget to use it.
I don't want to take the thread off-topic, or hi-jack it, but this is the exact press that I'm looking to buy in the next few days.
Since you guys are all here and several of you have this press, are there any other issues with this particular press besides getting a few burns?
I don't think it opens wide enough. I just ordered this heatpress end of Feb & my work was looking fine until a couple day ago it burned one of the shirts I made. I spoke to someone from Hix and he's sending me test labels to check the thermostat. I have an order for 120 shirts and I don't want to bun them.
