Default Heat Transfer technology getting close to DTG?

With the new transfer papers like Jet-Pro Softstrech and Alpha Gold Dark for Inkjet printers, do you think the quality compares to DTG printing or is getting very close?

Things like image quality, fade resistance and durability.

No. They are two different worlds. One look at the price of admission will indicate that.

A few hundred for inkjet. A few thousand, quite a few, for DTG.

If they were in the same arena, the need for DTG machines would cease to exist.

Has the quality of inkjet heat transfer paper risen dramatically with the availability of JPSS? Absolutely. Image, quality and fade resistance is consistently excellent with JPSS. Hope this helps.

I agree two different worlds, but closer than before. I think they will get closer as time goes on. ..... JB

JB , I know a few DTG printers that are concerned with the idea of that happening. Lol. That's a good sign for inkjet... one day, be nice if they were similar in quality as I already have the press.

The cutter is in the mail... I'm in no rush.. too much too learn, lol, so the slow train is fine by me. Have a great night. Hope you had a nice father's day yesterday. Saw the thread, a happy to you, too.

Thanks Kelly , did my girls spoiled me. I can't wait to see your creations with the vinyl. You should get Heat Applied transfer vinyl for t-shirt applications to send you some samples so you will be ready. ... I think the $150 diydtg is the first step to those machines comming down in price. I can't wait . I want one , but I'm cheap. .... JB

I dont think there is any comparison between dtg and transfer papers, and like Kelly said above that they are really 2 different things they are 2 different ways of getting a graphic on a garment but in no way are they anywhere near comparable. I myself started with heat transfers and found out very fast that I needed a better quality for my garments ( I sell to alot of high end baby boutiques in beach resort area) so DTG was the answer for me and it has worked well, although some people are happy with transfers. It really depends on what type of customer you are trying to cater to.

Not close yet. Heat press still has consistency issues that make it weaker by comparison. Papers DO seem to be getting better, but in my opinion, its just not a fair comparison right now.

Thanks for the input. I thought it might be the case. Since I am new to all this I have not had enough experience with the actual products from the different technologies and methods of decorating a garment.

It seems to me where DTG shines, even over screen printing, is high resolution, high color images of photographic quality. So printing on Jet-Pro Softstretch with a good inkjet and HT inks seemed like they could possibly be comparable.

Well...I guess I'll be the one in the minority on this topic...LOL

Actually, I've started moving much of my white / light shirt printing from my DTG to the JPSS paper (non DTG contract work...). I seem to get better image quality with photos and I would say the washability is comparable.

Now...I don't have a wide format printer (yet...lol) so anything that requires larger than 8.5" x 11" I will still use the DTG and DTG still is the only real option for putting a picture on a color / dark shirt in my opinion. Also use it for low quantity dark / color shirts where vinyl is not an option.

When I said they were getting closer, I was talking consistency. I was talking now verses 2 years ago. The hand on DTG is still much better than transfers. .... JB

DTG and heat transfers really are two different worlds but the heat transfers with the arrival of jpss has risen tremendously. I do anticipate the two coming closer as time goes on but right now I'm just very pleased with how heat transfers are evolving
