Default Making transfers with Oki 5150 color laser

I am debating whether to buy an inkjet printer or attempt to use my Oki 5150 to make full color transfers. My customer is wanting more colors than I can screenprint. Has anyone had any experience with printing transfers using the OKi 5150 without a window around the artwork and what was the quality like? I just placed an order for some PhotoTrans ImageClip transfer paper to give it a try.

You picked the right transfer paper. I have a C5200ne Okidata printer and I have been using Imageclip with very good result. However, if the image is made with some selection of pastel color the paper does not work well.

Imageclip transfered image is as close as you can get to screenprint look and feel. No polymer window/background. Search the forums for tips and tricks using Imageclip.

Thank you for the input. What kind of quality would this transfer paper produce if I were to use it for names and numbers on a ragland t-shirt jersey for a softball team? Does it work better on cotton or polyester or does it really matter?

Imageclip will work very well with names and numbers since the color will be solid.

As would any fabric that is pressed with heat transfer the finer the knit the better the quality of print will be. Ribbed knits will be hard to get good transfers because the areas between the ribs will not be penetrated. It is provably true with screen print as well. Imageclip will work on cotton, cotton blend and polyester. I have not tried it on polyester jersey though such as basketball or softball garments.

I received my ImageClip Transfer Paper. I was wondering, after reading the instructions, what paper setting on your printer do you run your paper through. I was reading about the 'fusing', and I'm curious if your settings would be the same as mine. Do you have any tips as far as the pressure when putting the two sheets together. My press has a knob, I will have to guess at the pressure settings. Thanks for all your help!

Use ultra heavy media weight or card stock. It is very important that you use the multi pass tray single sheet at a time facing up to avoid jamming.

As far as heat press pressure for the two papers without knowing how yours is setup I suggest you do the following:

1) Turn the knob half turn at time.
2) Keep count of the number of half turns.
3) Close and lock the clamp.

4) Open the clamp and repeat steps 1 , 2 and 3 until the clamp is very hard to close.
5) Turn the knob the opposite direction half the number of half turns.
6) Mark the position of the knob with nail polish to keep track of where you need to set the pressure the next time. Or just repeat the procedure above.

This will place your press at medium pressure.

BTW I use silicon baking cookie sheet when pressing the two papers to minimize polymer speckle on the red sheet. If you are going to use the baking sheet you need to put it on the lower platten when you are setting the first pressing pressure.

Make sure that you preheat the lower platten before you press your first set. You can do that by closing the clamp for 7 to 10 seconds with the set temperature.

Before pressing the first red paper on the shirt you also need to preheat the lower platten for the transfer heat setting.

I press with very heavy pressure at 400F between 10 to 15 seconds.

Going to try all of your instructions here shortly. I will let you know how it turns out. We played with it a little this morning. We ran the transfer paper on normal paper setting. We printed on one light blue and one heather colored t-shirt. After the transfer was applied we could see the shirt through both transfers. We are going to try your instructions and hopefully will have better results. Thanks!
