Default Yet another temperature question...

I just bought a used Hix 9x12. Press seems to be in great shape, temperature light comes on and goes off when the dial is set. My only question is how do I know it's getting to the right temp? I purchased a temp gun from Harbor Freight and tried to use it, but I can't get a good reading. I can tell the upper platen is getting really hot, but when i point the temp gun at it from say...12 inches, it only reads about 90 degrees. I know this thing is hotter than 90. Could the reflective surface of the metal on the top platen be giving me false readings? What could I put on it to get a true reading?

Hey Tim, I think the temp reading is probably more accurate very close to the platen. I have an IR heat gun form Harbor Freight as well. Try using close, if its really off by a lot take it back. It won't be perfect, but you can try to test it using a large pot of boiling water. It should read around 212. I don't think a couple degrees matters much. Hope this helps.

Chet, I think the temp gun works properly. I tested it on several things round the house and it seems to read pretty close to what it should. I turned on my flash dryer for my screen printing and got a good reading. I'm just wondering if the reflectiveness of the metal upper platen is causing the problem. I'll try holding closer when I get home.

Euan, I've read that post already and tried the different locations on the platen. Still same reading. I couldn't find the video that Lou speaks of though, and maybe that video has some more info.
