Default White shirts gone bad with discoloration

Hello Board members,

I pressed my very first shirt last night after bootleg battles and refund wars.

purchased the MP lite, had some pre made transfers for testing, and a Gillian White T.
  • I preheated the press 15 mins.
  • Pre pressed the T for 7 sec. (as directed)
  • Covered the transfer with parchment (cause I didn’t have a Teflon)
  • Pressed the print for 10 sec on 385 (as directed)
  • Peeled immediately
The print came out great and I’m happy but as I look closer I see that the white tee now has a yellowish discoloration the exact size of the platen.

I’ve seen other threads about discoloration but they all focused on the yellow settings on the printer. This was a pre made transfer so printer setting are not the issue.

I'll take any advice, thanks in advance.

What brand shirts are these?

Call Imprintables Warehouse and get a teflon sheet.

Lastly, you need to get a contact or laser thermometer and make sure your press temp is matching what it says on the read-out. We check ours every time we print, on a few different spots of the heating element.

If your heat press is dead on, the teflon sheet will help with the issue. Although 10 seconds is not that long, even at 385.

Its a 100% cotton Gillian, i think thats how its spelled, dont have it here, but its a good quality shirt.

Im gonna go ahead and order the Teflon just in case.

I thought maybe it was residue from the print not being trimmed but the discoloration is bigger then the print but only as big as the platten so Im thinking it is a temp issue or an issue with direct contact with the heat platen.

But im a rookie so not sure if im right yet.

Normally, 10 seconds at 385 degrees should not discolor a shirt.

I press all my 100% cotton Gildan shirts at 385 degrees for 13 seconds WITHOUT either a teflon or parchment sheet without discoloration.

I have noticed (since we press in many different locations), that the 'platen area' will look funny under certain lights. At a college gymnasium, all my shirts looked 'yellow' after pressing. That weekend drove me nuts. But under normal lighting, they were fine.

Perhaps you could mist the shirt a bit and throw in in the dryer (so the platen pressed area disappears) and see if it still looks yellow?
