The difference is in the inks I think. There are no good pigmented ink solutions for HP AFAIK, while Epson has either the Durabrite OEM inks or Magic Mix inks.

I have an HP printer (PSC 1315), and have not had any problems with the ink as far as bleeding goes (I always use genuine HP cartridges.) I do, however have a problem with the size of paper that my HP will print on (8.5 x 11).
