Default The next step, an alternative to vinyl

Hi,

I was just looking through the t-shirt forums for information on heat transfers and found a post you replied to.

Basically we just need some advice. We've got a plotter and heat press and have been making bespoke designs for people for a few weeks now, but someone emaied us asking for a shape and some complicated text in front of it. The text is fine because I can just go around in in AI but the shape behind it is impossible (I'm told) to do using vinyl because it has a gradient from orange to a deep yellow. This made me think of heat transfers, as I'd heard of them mentioneed before.

I don't understand how inkjet printers can print onto a paper that then lasts as long as vinyl once pressed onto a shirt?

Any advice would be very appreciated.

Thanks.

I don't think they would last as long as vinyl, in the sense that they eventually fade. The image will still be there, just not as bright. Where as vinyl will last a long time, even it's color. It's a trade off.

Thanks for your reply.

What I'm getting at more than quality is the actual process of what you need to actually produce t-shirt transfers?

You need to buy some good quality paper, if you have an inkjet (pigemnt based), then JeftPro Soft Stretch or Ironall. Laser, ImageClip. Print it, heat press it. That is pretty much it.

Excuse my ignorance, but when you say inkjet (pigment based), do you mean ordinary inkjet printers, or the pigment inks that I've seen advertised around, on eBay for instance?

Usually the pigment based inks are the best. Sometimes dye based inks can fade right away. Epson's Durabrite and their UltraChrome are pigment. I think some HP use pigment, but can't confirm that. I've never looked into the eBay ones, so I can't comment on that. I think I have heard bad reports on those.
