Default can you stack flock with vinyl?

as in press down some flock then press vinyl on top of it?

I see you can do it with some vinyl on vinyl but to jazz up the flock with some vinyl accents would make my life a lot easier!!! Will it work? Thanks!!!

Hi,

No you can't put vinyl on top of flock, the vinyl won't last long as the fibres from the flock would prevent it sticking properly. You can put vinyl under flock and in the past i have cut designs in flock which were overlaid onto a smaller piece of flock so that the vinyl could not be seen around the edge of the flock but parts could be seen 'through' the flock design. I hope i explained that ok, if not i'll try to dig out some pictures.

I agree with Lee. The best way is to cut the flock and just have the vinyl seal the edges so this why the vinyl is mostly attached to the shirt fibers. It will also cut down on the weight of the graphic on the shirt.

If you use the correct method this can be done very easily I have done many designs stacking vinyl on flock , ,, flock on vinyl,, glitter on flock and flock on glitter the only thing that cannot be done is the above method with metallics except the metallics will go over flock. Stacking of flocks and vinyl films can result in a great 3-d effects.

The durability of the vinyl will be compromised if you apply it to flock. Basically the vinyl sticks great at first, but through repeated wash and dry cycles the fibers of the flock break apart and the vinyl no longer has anything to hold to - therefore washing off or peeling up.

I made a shirt years ago that had green vinyl on top of white flock it said 'Celtic Pride'. The top layer of vinyl began peeling off after about 15 washes.

With all due respect I beg to differ with you ,it depends on the type of the glue that is used on the film product, different products will produce different results, I have seen the results first hand from a manufacturer that has over 20 years manufacturing films, so what I am saying is that some products work different than others.

I disagree. The films adhesive isn't the problem. The problem is how easily the flocks fibers break apart in the wash. Maybe it differs for each flock, but I haven't heard anyone ever say it would work until now.

I guess - I would recommend testing it yourself since there isn't a definitive answer.

Roger - Maybe you can list the proper combination of flock and film to use?

When I talk about the glue part of the whole process is that temp pressure and dwell timeall play a role, the glue part actually adheres to the flock foundation thru penetration and becomes a intagrated part of the whole structure thus in effect sealing the flock that is overlaid by the vinyl, now you will see the lock pressed down flat you can brush the flock to stand or it will eventually do it on its own. In most likelyhood standard materials seen on todays market with only a couple manufacturers making these products they either don't feel that this is a issue or are looking at other ways to improve their product but as far as I can see several top name design firms are pushing the envelope in the desire to create a different look that can only be realized by stacking materials.

I understand what you are saying but I still don't agree.

To summarize my viewpoint -
I would recommend that anyone wanting to do film on top of flock to test the process first with your specific materials and/or temper the customers expectations on durability for this specialty application.

Well not to drive a point home but the time period in which I grew up things have changed alot and in those times and current times now, people said certain things could not be done like glueing metal to metal or glass to glass or even cooking without heat or for that matter putting man on the moon, bullet proof glass etc. etc. so hmm vinyl layered on flock doesn't sound to out of line, I think the best thing for me to do is actually do a application and do a wash test so all can see the end result .
