Buying a cutter / printer would produce a very different type of transfer. One advantage would be that you could then print full color transfers but the feel of the transfer gets a bit thick and stiff for large coverage designs.
The problem with Transfer Express, as I see it, is that they a very expensive. Although they do have a great website and program for the end user, you pay a high price for it. I use Ace Transfer which produces the same type of transfer (probably a bit softer in my opinion) but are more affordable.
You'll never be able to compete head-to-head with screenprinters as they will always be cheaper BUT you have to take into consideration the savings of not have the equipment, supplies, resources and space to deal with if you screenprinted yourself.
