Discuss the various aspects of heat press technology. Transfer paper, inks, plastisol transfers, vinyl cutters, printers, commercial usage, durability, suppliers, etc.
Hi to all.
Done my first few tests today and not with out a few mistakes lol but managed to get some done.
Regretfully i scorched a few tester T`s but they were bought to try on and so didnt realy matter.
Got to admit they were the 50/50 i bough to try out, and if i`m to be honest well i`ll not be useing them again lol but just wanted some testing done.
Now i also probs done something that many have said not to do and i also tested on a 100% cotton and beleave it or not i droped down the heat and slightly upped the digital timer time and it worked out realy well.
Was some what amazed that it worked out better on the 100% cotton than it did on the 50/50
Any way i also tryed some tests on some old track suits i had lying about and i was amazed at the depth and quality i got but was realy good and i managed to get the red spot on
Now my problem is i knoticed that on the T`s shirts there was scorching on them, faint as it might be but still were scorched so i was wondering if there is like some sort of cover i can use over the papper transfear to stop this ??
Its a learning process i know but i`m learning with the help from every one here.
Hi Jim you might be able to wash that out I have been told by others that it will some times wash out ... now when it comes to cover your transfer I dont do that but you can get silicone paper
Teflon sheets are great to put onto of the transfer before you press. It keeps the fabric from scorching. Are you doing heat transfers with transfer paper? If yes, I always do a second press after I peel the release paper. I give the shirt a stretch and lay it back down, put the teflon down again and repress around 5 or seconds. It seems to help the image set in and it does give it a nice finish to the image. Sorry, I'm including it in case you are doing transfer papers, but I'm not sure if your using plastisol. Telflon sheets are available from some of the preferred vendors here, as well as other suppliers.
@ Girlzndollz
Hi mate, yes i`m useing heat transfear papper with my Epson D88 printer and subli ink.
Nice tip about about leaving the Teflon sheet on for the transfear, i`ll get one of them today and i also like the extra tip in after the transfear is done, to do a 5 second after heat press to seal it, thanks for that and your hints and help.
@ jberte
Now thats music to my ears lol good to know it will last me a long time, and i`m sure after a few months it will of payed for its self.
Thanks to all for all the help and tips, its been great and i`m now off to buy a few Teflon sheets
My mug press came yesterday and then i relized that i didnt have any heat tape for it so its still all a learning in process class for me lol.
Thanks again to every one.
Well, good luck to you, Jim. Btw, I use pigment ink, not sure if the subdye users are doing a second press, but I bet you could find someone to ask or post a new thread asking. I hope your's is a fun journey, I know for me it's so cool to make these things. GL!!
May not be a good idea to repress dye sublimation ink. Second generation sublimation may cause color shift and blow through. I am curious as to why you are using dye sub on 50/50 and even worse on 100% cotton. Dye sub is used on high poly content substrate. Works best on 100% polyester. Unless what you call subli ink is not a dye sublimation ink.
I red in the forum that spraying hydorgen peroxide diluted with water will get rid of the scorching. Worth a try if you are still getting scorching even with teflon sheet. Have not tried it to know.

Thanks for your reply kelly
Well i`m still learning but its totaly enjoyable and loving it, i cant stop lol.
The misses is now thinking of going and buying a load of locks to put on the airing cubords ect and nailing the draws closed so i dont take any other t-shirts to try as the kids tops are disapearing fast lol.
I`ll not be doing the 2nd press then if this is what others dont do, havent done any 2nd press on anything as yet as i like to see the responses first and go on all your views as its a greta forum here and i`m learning all the time with every ones help.
Hi lnfortun m8.
Yes i think i might of jumped the gun in thinking of pressing the item for the 2nd time just with it been a new adventure i wanted to try many things lol.

Well from some of the reading (done a lot of it the last two weeks) i thought that i could do it on 50/50 and decided to give it a try, which didnt work out well and i did not like the end product, so it wont be 50/50 again lol.
The cotton issue well i just wanted to try it i suppose, and to be honest it worked better than the 50/50 and i was quite amazed at the end product.
Testing mode again i suppose and i jumped the gun again

I do use geniune rotech dye sublimation ink, sorry if i miss lead the reply.
As to the spraying hydorgen peroxide diluted with water and useing that for scorching, i`ve read on the forum here that its not worth it so i have opped to go for the teflon sheet and have just ordered 2 the other day from a supplyer.
Personaly i think i`m just jumping the gun on it all and need to take a step back and take one step at a time, as i`m moving 2 fast for even me lol.
Pratice makes perfect as they say lol, but what has been amazing me is i`ve now seen a couple of videos and people useing the press at heat of up to 270 and pressing for lenghts of 15 secs to 30 secs and on cotton ?
Still got a lot to learn.
Thanks again to all for their input and help i`m very much greatfull.

You're welcome, and Luis is right, I didn't notice you said cotton and are using subdye. That's not a good match up. From what I've read, the 100 cotton is the least favorable fabric, but the 50/50 blend can be successful when used with a spray that pretreats the image area prior to pressing to help the dye adhere to the cotton portion of the fabric. I hope you are able to work this part out. It seems like it will be integral to your success. There are definitely threads regarding subdye ink with cotton, and you may be able to read alot of others experiences -good and bad- by finding those.
Jumping in, well, when I jumped in, it was 18/7, for weeks on end. It's too much fun, agreed, but only when I felt like I was having success. Again, thank you Tshirtforums for giving that to me, I didn't have it b4 joining here, and wouldn't have had it on my own.
If you stay with subdye (instead of moving to pigment ink - best on cotton) - think about checking into that pretreating spray if you want to continue with cotton blend, you may like the results alot better, and best of luck to you!
Ahh, one more thing the main reason for my post, is that 270 in degrees?
there is new paper being made in china that will print subdye on Cotton and it is being tested by forum member and it has pass the 3 times wash and you can use it with Pigment ink to I will have some on monday but here is the web site ¡ËYIWU TAIYI ARTS&CRAFTS¡Ë and it is self weeding to
@ Kelly
Yes thanks for your reply once again
To be honest just b4 i joined this great forum i was interested in the printing and then after reading loads of treads i signed up.
Then got my heat press and then cup press and plate press will be bought soon also.
The reason why i chose subdye ink was i thought it was the main type used, and the reason why i bought the Epson D88 printer to go with it, as i have a Epson DX8450 which i use as my normal printer as its a all in one with scanner ect.
I`m interested in the pigment ink that you mention, but will this alow me to print on cotton aswell as 50/50 and polly ?
If its cheaper than the ink i use now i`ll be happy to change over as here in the uk its very expensive.
@ Davis
Yes i have been watching that tread that you mentioned and looking for the results on the testing.
From what i`ve read from the members so far is that its passing very well on all fronts so far.
jim yes it is and the nice thing is you would only need one paper to do all. I would like to ask how much do you pay for subdye ink compared to pigment ink
Hi again David
Well i have to order it from a main dealer and they charge £62.99 english pounds for standard size epson D88 cartridges of the 4 different colours and its free postage and they are quick at send the item out as i have bough a few things from them now.
They are all pre-filled with 15ml of genuine rotech dye sublimation ink.
As to the price of pigment ink well i`m not sure ? never used or bough any !
Few questions for you and members.....
Can pigment ink be used in the same way as dye sublimation ink and used in say my re-fillable ink cartridges in my Epson D88 printer ?
Can this ink be printed on say 100% cotton aswell as polly ect ?
Just that i thought i needed to use the dye sub ink to print on the T`s shirst, and as the ink i use now is expensive well i`m very interested in this pigment ink if it will alow me to use it on T`s and cups ect.
Also do i need any specific type ? to use for say cups and tops and do i need special papper as i have 230 gram and 120 gram papper that i use for the subli printing and the higher 230 works great.
Just to add to the above post.....
Just found a main dealer that sells the Pigment based ink for my printer.
I can get 400ml of bulk refill bottle set for £28 and that is 100ml Black, Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow in 100ml bottles. So the main question is........ can i use pigment ink instead of subli ink on T`s and tops and such, and also cups ? I dont mind useing the subdye for the cups but if i can use the pigment for tops then this will save me a hell of a lot of money. Also can pigment ink be used to print on cotton ect, i`ve put this in a new post i made and hope the staff dont mind that i continue this tread.
