Default Noob question re T shirt pressing

Hi
I am a total newbie at this and I just heat pressed some text onto a T shirt using magic touch tranfer paper. The text came out lovely and clear but around the text you could see the glue from the transfer paper. So the text was sat inside an oblong of this transfer paper residue.
What am i doing wrong - heat too hot? heat not enough? Timing too long? Timing too oshort? Pressure? Anyone who can point me in the right direction will be much appreciated.
