Discuss the various aspects of heat press technology. Transfer paper, inks, plastisol transfers, vinyl cutters, printers, commercial usage, durability, suppliers, etc.
Hi,
I was wondering if anyone knew of any type of application tape you would use for printed transfers on a large format printer, then cutting on a plotter? Someone told me to try regular vinyl application tape, and for the most part it worked, until I got to the end of peeling it off and it took some of the color with it. Does this work, but I just didnt do it right? I waited until it was cooled down (about 5 mins). Any info would be good.
Thanks
For heat pressing, I wouldn't recommend regular sign vinyl transfer tape. Not only will it take some color with it, but it might also leave residue on your shirts.
Get a product called Magic Mask. It's almost exactly like the backing sheets for apparel vinyl. It's sticky, and you would put your opaque transfers face down on that.
You can also use it when you cut your transfers for lights. Put your paper face up on it and cut. Then you would leave your transfer on the Magic Mask, and go directly to pressing.
Magic Mask is designed to withstand the temperatures of a heat press without leaving any residue on your transfer or on your shirt.
R Type also makes a low tack tape of color transfers. Id assume it would work for printed garment material as well. Best thing to do is call your vendor and ask if they have any input.

If you are using the tape as a carrier to help with gripping with the cutter, than Magic Mask will do. If you are looking for a tape that will carry a transfer paper that has already been through a cutter, then you will want a transfer tape. R-Tape, as mentioned above, does have one that works great. I have no clue what the product number is (and they have thousands of different products), but I know you can get it from The Paper Ranch (Heat Transfer, Dye Sublimation and Engraving Equipment & Supplies Source). It is like 12" wide and is pretty long.
I am new at this and have questions about using tape to hold transfers in place.
1. What kind of tape to use>
2.when i place more than i page on shirt do i put tape on back of transfer paper? Will it stick to top of press?
3. Does it peel off with paper or melt into paper?

I use Stahls teflon tape for taping multiple transfers on a shirt. Here is something I do also:
1. Locate/align/place the first piece
2. Press it for a second to keep it from moving.
3. Take the next transfer
4. Repeat 1 and 2
5. Do the rest using steps 1, 2 and 3 until everything is in place.
6. Press everything for final pressing
7. Peel the backing hot or cold depending on the type of transfer paper.
