Default help with pricing?

I have added a vinyl cutter toy 'arsenal' of equipment. Have done a good little bit of work with it now, enough to be competent in the operation and use of the machine, and of the materials. I am struggling with bidding jobs, however. I seem to greatly underestimate the complexity (and thus, weeding time). Can anyone offer any guidelines for costing this type of work? I know that with experience, I will become better at this aspect of the business, but I thought that maybe some generous soul would like to help me along?

I know many folks here charge by the square inch of material used. Myself, I look the design over, maybe even cut one to try it out, and then base my pricing from there.

Right now, I want to make in the neighborhood of $25-$35/hr for my labor. SO.....I break it down as such:

Simple text design on a tee (10mins from cut to press) - $6.00 in labor plus cost of tee (larger quantity orders, the price comes down a bit)

Simple logo design on tee (15mins from cut to press) - $8.00 in labor plus cost of tee (again, more shirts, less cost per piece)

And then so on. I don't charge a setup or artwork fee as yet because I haven't dealt with anything too complex. Basically, I'm looking to charge around $10 - $15 per tee depending on quantity. If they want over 100 pieces, I go with plastisol transfers as the time/effort ratio becomes prohibitive.

I'm hoping that gives you an idea as to how to go about pricing your work. I look at the per hour earnings, rather than the cost of the vinyl and tee. So far, I've made more than I thought possible with it. (and yet, I'm still not a millionaire).

If it's a one off, I charge $18 each tee, that's for a Gildan or PA tee, a 1 color design in 1 location. I may do a price break at 6 or 10 depending on the complexity of the design.

I don't do large quantities of vinyl...if someone wants 20 or more, then I go to silk screening.

It's really important to see their artwork, or get a very clear idea of which stock design they want you to modify BEFORE you quote them a price. Otherwise they start adding this, and changing that, and "oh, I want a polo shirt" etc.

Don't under price yourself. If someone thinks $18 is too much for a custom tee, I don't want that customer.
