Default black/dark garments learning and cutting for them

Hey there. I did a search on the forum as well as youtube.com

Im wondering about two things...

1. Where I can I learn, with great detail, the process of transferring to a black/dark garment? A video tutorial perhaps? A tutorial with many pictures?

2. I read the thread on "what do you use to cut your transfers for white tshirts" but I am trying to figure out if you have to cut ones for black/dark garments with a plotter/cutter.

From what Ive gathered [and I could be wrong, which is why question 1 is here] you have to cut the "opaque" paper to fit between the garment and the transfer. Wouldnt they have to be dead-on otherwise white would hang out the sides? Can you do a clean print on a black/dark garment by handcutting it?

Would I have to order the transfer from someone else?

Im new so I dont know all the terms and names for all of the products and their functions.

Thanks again guys!

Check Cafepress.com..directions for imaging dark shirts is there. You'll need the right program. Photoshop, Coreldraw, Illustrator etc. Good luck!

Yes, for opaque transfers (for dark garments) you do need to cut your transfers to follow the contour of your design, otherwise you end up with a box-effect that doesn't look very professional.

A lot of people cut their transfers by hand. That works for simple contours, but if you get into complex designs and don't want to use just a rectangle or oval, you might want to look into getting a vinyl cutter that will do automatic contour-cutting for your transfers.

A good beginner plotter for inkjet or laser transfers is the Graphtec CE5000-40 CraftROBO Pro. It cuts 15" wide and will read registration marks that you add to your image your design program automatically.

This plotter (vinyl cutter) costs about $950, but it's a VERY robust and capable machine.

Another, cheaper, option is the Graphtec CraftROBO (not Pro). It will cut about 8 inches wide, but it's a more limited machine. It costs around $350.

Right now I suggest that if anyone wants to purchase one of these machines they go to Specialty Graphics Supply

They give a 5% discount to forums members when you add their discount code (found by looking under "View Offers" on the left side of your screen here), and they offer a 10% discount on all supplies for 30 days after you purchase your machine.

With a vinyl cutter it will open up many more options for you, too, like using t-shirt vinyl for shirts, vinyl decals, adn signs (if you want to make signs I suggest you go with the larger Graphtec CE5000-60 24" plotter, also available at Specialty).

Good luck!

What makes the Graphtec 15" Craft ROBO PRO stand out against the Roland 15" StiKa SV-15?

They both claim to use registration marks. Neither says they have an optical eye. What are your thoughts comparing those two machines?

Doug, the Graphtec Ce5000-40 will take 19" material and cut almost 15" the Roland can't do that, also the ce5000-40 is exactly the same as the 60 model just scaled down which puts it in the same catagory as the roland 24 and the graphtec ce5000-60 just on a smaller scale.

The Roland Stika and Graphtec CraftROBO (not Pro) are all hobby machines and are not as versitile and durable as the CE5000 range of plotters.
