Default Sublimation versus ink jet - Just Starting

This is a great forum. I have created a couple of tshirts using the iron on papers. I had a lot of trouble peeling the paper and have already realized that these might be ok for my own stuff but I don't think I can use it to make anything for sale, a heat press will be required. Let me know if you disagree.

As I read about the sublimation system versus ink jet it seems that the sublimation system is the way to go if you are selling t shirts that are expected to last a long time unless you go DTG.

How much of a market is there for t shirts which are created with an ink jet transfer and what is the typical buyer. It would seem that if you sold shirts at a fair or something one year and they were worn out the following year the word would spread pretty quickly. I have purchased shirts of that type myself and they probably lasted until I ruined them in another way

If you start with sublimation it would seem that your equipment will always be able to produce products which you are happy with.

So experts, if you were just starting would you go sublimation or epson ink jet transfers? Thanks

They are really two completely different applications. Inkjet transfers work on cotton, 50/50,... and is really glueing ink to the top of some type of fabric. Dye sublimation only works on synthetic fibers because the ink actually goes inside the polyester molecules and "dyes" them. Sublimation gives you the ability to decorate more things than just fabric - but these substrates must have a special polyester coating on them. Here is a link to a page that describes the process / equipment / consumables of sublimation.

MultiRIP Screen Printing, Sublimation, Transfers, Photograph and General Printing RIP Software

Best thing to do is go to a distributor or a trade show and see first-hand what each process can do. Both of them definitely have their place in the market (i.e. different substrates, price points,...). Best wishes,

Mark

and don't forget laser transfers!..laser dye sub toners are now available and work well..no more clogged nozzles, nozzle checks etc...and last longer and the initial start up cost is not much different
