Talking Top Ten Ways To Prevent Fading

If there is anyone out there with alot of good experience who can offer a list of the top ten ways to prevent early fading in shirt designs that would be great!

I'm specifically looking to prevent fading when using a white 100% cotton t-shirt with heat transfer paper. I have an HP Officejet J5780 all-in-one (printer, copier, scanner, fax) and I'm using an E-Z Press 10X14 Heat Transfer machine.

I have yet to make a heat transferred shirt and am looking for tips to help me prevent as many problems as possible. Anyone with mistakes they've made that they can pass on so we don't do the same?

Thanks in advance!

Hi ~ I don't think an HP printer is going to work. As far as I know, they all use dye-based ink and you need to use pigment-based ink. See Lou's post on the difference: Pigment vs dye ink.. Why?

Also, what kind of transfer paper are you using? That will definitely determine the post-wash quality of the transfer.

I can't list ten, but I think this is a good idea:

So far we have:

#1: Use a pigment based ink (reference: Pigment vs dye ink.. Why? )

I'd like to add....

#2: Do not oversaturate the paper with ink. (Print at a lower dpi to prevent running/bleeding)

#3: Let the inks on the printed paper dry before heat pressing.

Here are three more...

#4: Allow at least 24 hours after printing before doing the first wash.

#5: Turn shirt inside out and wash in cold water.

#6: Do not wash with chlorine bleach, non-chlorine bleach, bleach substitutes, or detergents containing these items. Do not wash with Oxy-clean or products containing Oxy-clean.

Use the right temperature and pressure. And don't trust the temperature gague on your press unless you have calibrated it.
