Default Need help for a beginner please...heat pressed shirts are fading

Some friends of mine have started a shirt business. They have some kind of a big metal ink fed system and it does ok...The problem is, they made me a couple of shirts and I washed them "insideout" but they faded bad...

I asked if they are using a hot press and they said yea and they make it a little hotter than reccomended, and they also pretreat the shirts like directions say.

They asked me to find some forums where I might can get some help. What do you guys/gals think is the problem?

They use 50/50 most of the time but are gonna try some 100% cotton and see how that does.

We would have to know exactly what kind of printing system they are using to be able to figure out what's happening.

Inkjet transfers? What kind of ink? What kind of transfers?

also besides the type printing system/type transfer but the type of garment...polyester/50/50 blend/100%cotton.

It sounds like transfers that are purchased at some of the office supply stores

Well as of right now I dont know the machine. I think maybe a high end Epson maybe???Not sure??

The problem is when the make a shirt it fades after washing pretty bad. I dont know what kind of ink, but its whatever is made for putting on clothing. Big bottles of it.

They are trying some 100% cotton I think to see if that works any better. But what they wanted to know is....IS there anything they can do to make it not wash out as easy? They pretreat the clothes like the dirrections state..

Thanks Much.....

We can't know without knowing more information about their setup.

Best to get as much detailed information from your friend and then post back with the details.

Kinda odd for your friends to be biz owners and not join the forums to ask themselves, but instead ask their customer(s) to do it.

Have your friends setup a free account here for a wealth of info and answers, instead of having you ask the questions for them, especially without knowing all the details to help get a good answer.

They are friends of mine....Im not just a customer..I will try and get the model of the printer...Just seems like an all around answer for this question though...There will only be a yes or no to my question ...Yes there is something you can do to prolong the life of a print, or NO there isnt anything you can do..lol...Not trying to be hard headed or mean in anyway as the internet can sometimes feel that way...Thanks again and I will try and get back.

mike, nobody is trying to short-change you on an answer.......the problem is that there simply is NOT a yes or no answer to your friend's question - it's not just the type of printer that matters - it's also the specific type of ink they're using and the specific type of transfer paper. we simply need more information to give you a sensible answer!

Pre-treatment is an interesting factor in your initial question. That usually is associated with either Dye-sub trying to use cotton or DTG and white ink. There are a ton of variables and printing methods and like everyone has mentioned no yes or no answer without some specifics. The answer you are looking for is here and we want to help. We just need some info to solve the problem. Ask your friends what printing method they are doing and we will fix you up no problem.

Maybe someone here with experience can tell us all what types of ink seem to be a match made in heaven with a certain type of transfer paper that lasts through many washes. Also if the heat temp makes a difference, what is the recommended temp?

Anything else anyone can think of to make sure to do to prevent fading if you're just starting out? Special tips or supplies?

OK...I have been so busy that I just havent remembered to call them up and ask what they have..
The transfers are directly on the shirts...OR ....they can also use transfer paper. The transfers seem to hold up a little better on the transfer paper... Its the ink directly on the shirt that doesnt last long at all...
Im gonna try and call them up if i can remember...

OK...Hope this helps ....
Is the Fast T-Jet2 SDT-1200w....They use Fast Ink3 inks....They pretreat dark colors so the inks are supposed to do right. They also use another treatment to make the colors POP.

They use a big square iron press..."dont know what kind"...But im sure its very common.

Hope this helps...

The process is called "Direct To Garmet" or DTG

Lots of info here in the appropriate forum section

They are doing DTG printing and heat pressing the shirts to set the ink. Is it only the black shirts fading or both black and white?
