Discuss the various aspects of heat press technology. Transfer paper, inks, plastisol transfers, vinyl cutters, printers, commercial usage, durability, suppliers, etc.
Hi All, I while back I had requested some feedback on the pros and cons of using a EuroPro 5100 steam press (1300 watts). Research has given me the impression that this press can also be used without steam for heat transfers. However, now I have an option to get very used 1950’s Hurley Press for about $50.00. The only info I could find on this machine was what my Mom remembers from back in the day (“Oh yes the Hurley Press, they were great”). If anyone has any ideas on which would provide the best results could you please help me out? Neither of them have degree settings just the cotton, wool linen temp adjustments. Is that the norm for Heat Presses most of the post refer to temp settings in degrees.

I don't think that a press without temp settings will work well..for example I regularly press garments, but depending on the transfer, use anything from 320F to 405F. So there is no way I could do this without some sort of temp setting and one that will hold that setting during the time I am pressing, sometimes as much as an hour or so maybe more
Thanks for responding Charles. Do you think the EuroPro steam press functions on the same level as a household iron. I was hoping it got a little hotter with all of the wattage it uses. The instructions do not have a watts vs. degree comparison but I did see on another post that Heat transfer machines can generally use from 1200 - 1400 watts. Not really sure how that relates to heat but... The 1950's Hurley press seamed more like a t-shirt press but because it was so old I wasn't sure between the two.
wattage has absolute nothing to do with the degrees of heat. the temperature is controlled by a thermostat within the press...with a home iron, you do have a selection of cotton, linen...etc but that does not tell you the temp and the selection is meaningless. I have transfers that I do on cotton at 320F and others that I do at 400F...so you can see without the thermostat adjusting the temps, it wont work.
